India is set to adopt the National Plan of Action for Conservation and Management of Sharks (NPOA-Sharks) to improve shark conservation and management. The plan focuses on legal, administrative, research, and cooperation measures to sustain shark populations, crucial for over 200,000 people dependent on shark fisheries.
Announced at a Kochi meeting on February 19, 2024, thea initiative is a collaboration between the Department of Fisheries, the Government of India, and other agencies. Ms. Neetu Kumari Prasad, Joint Secretary, and Dr. P Krishnan, Director of BOBP-IGO, emphasized the plan's role in sustainable fisheries and compliance with international regulations, marking a significant step in shark conservation efforts.
