June 5-World Environment Day: BOBP-IGO marks this day with two posters and a message

Humans since the beginning of history have been in a competitive relationship with nature. In pursuit of progress, modernisation, and ever-increasing comforts of life, man has increased environmental stress, especially through industrial revolution and wanton destruction of natural capital. Result: rapid increase in greenhouse gases, large-scale deforestation, biodiversity loss, severe land degradation and environmental pollution. Accumulation of plastics in the environment are adversely affecting wildlife, habitats, and humans. Micro-plastics in the oceans are entering the food chain. Significant climate changes are being witnessed leading to unprecedented floods, droughts, intense rains, severe heatwaves, ocean warming, increased acidity in the oceans, melting glaciers, rising sea levels and much more. Abuse of natural resources have increased the carbon emission rate and the earth’s temperature by 0.85 degree centigrade in the 21st century. Studies show that with the current trends, frequency of irregularities in climate will increase year after year. Let us join hands and act. Let us take small steps today for a better tomorrow.
